Living Well Medical Acupuncture

Dr. Jori Carter is a board- certified Gynecologic Oncologist, a physician who specializes in caring for women with cancer, and a certified practitioner of Medical Acupuncture. Medical acupuncture is performed by a doctor trained and licensed in Western medicine who has also had thorough training in acupuncture as a specialty practice. Because Dr. Carter is a physician, she can use acupuncture or Western medicine, or a combination of both as the need arises, to treat an illness. Her priority is to improve health, prevent illness, and treat various medical conditions, with a special focus on cancer care. Dr. Carter is an expert in diagnosing and treating women with gyn cancers (ovarian, uterine, cervical, vulvar, and vaginal) with treatments that include surgery, chemotherapy, and other traditional methods, and believes that many symptoms and healing can be aided with acupuncture.

Acupuncture Treatments

Acupuncture is a very old medical art and has been used to successfully treat more people over the last 2,000 years than all other health modalities combined around the world. In Chinese medicine acupuncture helps regulate the flow of energy called Qi (pronounced “chee”) that runs in channels inside and over the surface of the body.  The movement of Qi allows the organs to function properly. Modern science has shown that acupuncture changes pain messages sent to the brain.  It also causes the nervous system to release natural chemicals that relieve pain and promote healing.

Individual Sessions

The initial visit will include a Traditional Chinese Medicine evaluation and an individualized treatment to follow. You will spend approximately 11/2 hours for the initial visit and 45 minutes for subsequent visits. There aren't many conditions/symptoms that acupuncture doesn’t help. This is probably because acupuncture works to restore balance in your body and kickstart and support your natural ability to heal.

Group Sessions for Cancer Patients and Survivors

Every other week I will offer group sessions for patients currently undergoing chemotherapy, and for cancer survivors. This allows for effective affordable acupuncture treatments and a venue for a self-directed support group. The treatments will include auricular (ear) acupuncture and treatments of the extremities, all while sitting comfortably in a chair.

What to Expect

Treatments may consist of auricular (ear) acupuncture, acupuncture on the body with thin, sterile needles that are inserted through the skin at precise acupuncture locations which may be warmed or stimulated with a weak electrical current, specific treatments to alleviate pain, which may include scraping or cupping.
